About Me:
My name is Mrs. Rashty and I have been teaching for twelve years. I taught in Farmington Public Schools for many years where I was nominated teacher of the year in 1997 by a group of parents, community leaders and students. I was a counselor at Birmingham Covington School. For a few years I was in private practice as a child, adolescent and family therapist in Novi, Mi. I love teaching at Akiva Hebrew Day School currently, where my own four children attend.
My Philosophy:
I teach second graders with an active, developmentally appropriate technique. I feel that hands on learning with the children acitivelty involved in the dialy lesson, is the best way to reach each and every student. I teach using all of the eight intelligences described by Daniel Goldman.
My classroom supports a postivie learning community that welcomes all ideas in an open, and respectful envirmoment. Children learn how to work together and problem solve together and at the same time develop independence and self awareness.
I have a balanced literacy program that uses Fountas and Pinnell running records, assessment data. We use the reading a-z website for leveled books that directly fit the needs of each and every student. We work on fluency, comprehension skills, word study skills and discussion skills through frequent book club meetings. We use guided reading, independent reading, and reader's workshop. We also use writer's workshop on a daily basis to teach every writing concept and skill to create a confident and skilled writer.
Our math program is called "Bridges" and it involves hands on group learning with many skills taught each day. Please view www.themathlearningcenter. org to learn more about our exciting program.
Social studies and science are integrated into our day with experiments, map skills and many different concepts.
